Class Description
Our formal ballet classes, based on the Russian (Vaganova) method, provide a progressive learning experience. This method, developed over a century ago by Agrippina Vaganova, continues to evolve, encompassing all aspects a dancer needs. It instils musicality, strength, flexibility, control, stamina, and the entire use of the upper body, enabling dancers to express themselves freely and develop as artists. This is the preferred training method for most professional ballet companies and associated schools worldwide.
Allied Dance Styles:
In addition to ballet, students are exposed to allied dance styles:
- Levels 1 & 2: Jazz Dance
- Levels 3 & 4: Contemporary and Character Dance
- Levels 5 & 6: Pre Pointe/Pointe, Contemporary and Character Dance
- Levels 7 & 8: Pre Pointe/Pointe and Contemporary Dance
Each level also includes Body Conditioning classes to strengthen the student’s range and quality of movement.
Styles offered in these Levels :
- Ballet based on the Vaganova method
- Jazz Dance (Levels 1 & 2): These classes engage younger students in dynamic, lively, and energetic movements, providing a contrast to the static nature of Ballet in these levels.
- Contemporary Dance (Levels 3-8): Our contemporary dance classes incorporate concepts from techniques such as Graham, Cunningham, Horton, and Alexander Technique, blending them with current dance trends. This is why ballet must be taken in conjunction with contemporary dance.
- Character Dance (Levels 3-6): Intended to explore different cultures, Character dance is a specific subdivision of classical dance, representing traditional folk or national dances, mostly from European countries.
Formal Assessments:
Formal Assessments are held at the end of term 3 each year, providing a goal for students to work towards. Students are assessed by current industry professionals, with a formal report detailing what each student is doing well and areas that need the greatest improvement. If your child is participating, an assessment fee is added to the term 3 invoice.
Competitions:
While we are not a competition school, students are allowed to participate in solo competitions if they desire. We recommend a maximum of two or three per year, which can be learned in private lessons.
Private lessons:
Private lessons are offered to students requesting extra tuition, or wanting to learn solos. These can be arranged where studios and teaching time are available.
Performance
Term 4 is dedicated to our end-of-year show, with each student performing in a professionally produced show in December that highlights their learnings throughout the year. Students rehearse their dances during class time in Term 4, with three extra rehearsal days added. This gives each student vital stage time with all the bells and whistles of a professional production. A performance levy is added to the term 4 invoice, covering the associated costs.
