Thinking about joining an adult ballet class in Melbourne? You’re not alone. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can settle in, meet your teacher, and get comfortable in the space. It’s a good idea to let the instructor know you’re new. They’ll be happy to offer extra support and guidance throughout class.

There’s no need for special gear when starting out. Most students wear leggings or fitted activewear with a tank top or T-shirt. The goal is to wear something that allows movement while also helping your instructor see your alignment and posture. Ballet slippers are ideal, but clean socks are often fine for a first class. Hair should be tied back neatly in a bun or ponytail to keep it out of your face.

Hydrate before class and bring a water bottle. Avoid heavy meals beforehand. Opt for a light snack an hour or two before class. If you tend to sweat or the studio is warm, bring a small towel and consider a light jumper or wrap for warm-up and cool-down. Some dancers like to bring a notebook to jot down ballet terms or notes from class.

Don’t worry if ballet terminology sounds unfamiliar. Most adult ballet classes in Melbourne are designed to be beginner-friendly, and instructors will explain positions and movements as you go. Terms are often in French, but with time and repetition, they’ll start to feel familiar.

You’ll begin with a warm-up at the barre, focusing on posture, balance, and foundational movements. From there, you may move to the centre of the room for basic combinations that help develop coordination and musicality. Listen to the music and allow it to guide your rhythm and timing. Focus on how your body feels. Ballet is about steady growth, not perfection. You’ll likely wobble or miss a step. Everyone does at first. What matters is that you enjoy the process - making mistakes is part of the experience.

Studio etiquette is simple but important. Give others space at the barre and listen carefully during instruction. Phones should be silenced, and chatting is best saved for before or after the lesson to maintain focus. After class, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Most teachers are happy to explain further or provide extra tips. Take a few minutes to stretch and cool down before you leave. This supports muscle recovery and gives your body time to absorb the benefits of your movement. With each class, you’ll build confidence, strength, and a deeper connection to your body.

So if you're looking for a welcoming, supportive adult ballet class in Melbourne, there's no better time to begin, and there's no better studio to join than Melbourne Institute of Dance. Come as you are - ready to move!
